Alpine Escape

A minimalist sauna retreat in the heart of a snow-covered forest.

Project Overview

Nestled in a snow-covered alpine forest, Alpine Escape is a bespoke sauna that combines minimalist design with natural elegance. This cozy yet modern retreat offers an immersive experience in nature, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing breathtaking views of the surrounding winter wonderland.

The Vision

The client’s dream was clear: create a warm, inviting sauna space that harmonizes with the snowy alpine environment. Their key goals included:

  • Immersive Design: Maximizing the connection between indoor comfort and outdoor serenity.
  • Durability: Ensuring the sauna could withstand harsh alpine winters while maintaining its sleek aesthetic.
  • Natural Elements: Using sustainable materials that blend seamlessly into the forest surroundings.

The Challenges

  1. Weather Resistance: Designing a structure that could endure heavy snowfall, extreme temperatures, and strong winds.
  2. Structural Integrity: The foundation needed to adapt to uneven terrain while keeping the sauna stable.
  3. Heating Efficiency: Optimizing insulation and heating systems to maintain consistent warmth, even in sub-zero conditions.

Design & Build Process

Architectural Design:

Spa Prof created a minimalist rectangular structure with clean lines and large glass panels for uninterrupted views of the forest. The warm glow from inside contrasts beautifully with the snowy exterior, creating a cozy atmosphere.

Material Selection:

  • Wood: Locally sourced cedar for the interior, known for its durability and insulating properties.
  • Glass: Triple-glazed, frost-resistant panels to retain heat and provide a crystal-clear view.
  • Foundation: A raised wooden platform supported by natural stone, keeping the structure stable while preserving the terrain.

Construction:

  • On-site assembly ensured a perfect fit with the landscape.
  • Specialized weatherproofing treatments were applied to the exterior wood.
  • An energy-efficient heating system and integrated ventilation maintained a comfortable interior temperature, even during snowstorms.

Outdoor Integration:

The outdoor area was designed to enhance the sauna experience, featuring:

  • Subtle under-deck lighting to highlight the structure’s elegant lines.
  • Natural stone accents and a wooden bench for cooling off after a sauna session.
  • A small pathway leading to the forest, inviting guests to explore the surroundings.

Key Features

  • Floor-to-Ceiling Windows: Allowing guests to feel fully immersed in the alpine setting.
  • Efficient Heating: A wood-burning stove and advanced insulation keep the interior warm and inviting.
  • Eco-Friendly Design: Built with sustainability in mind, using local materials and minimal environmental impact.
